Change the account tax identification number

Are you trying to transfer account ownership? See the guide Transfer account ownership.

For security reasons, once you have added a VAT number to an account, you cannot change it freely. You have to request the modification through the Support channel.

Before you ask for the change: one tax identifier is one account

Section titled “Before you ask for the change: one tax identifier is one account”

Every tax identifier has its own account on B2Brouter. A tax ID change is for correcting the identifier of the same taxpayer: a value typed wrong, one personal identifier replaced by another for the same person, or registry data that changes without changing who files the taxes.

When the taxpayer itself changes, the route is not a tax ID change: it is to create a new account with the new identifier.

  • Succession of a sole trader. A person’s own identity number is not transferable. If you take over the business your parent ran, you are a different taxpayer, even though the business and the customers are the same.
  • From sole trader to a company. The company you have set up is a different legal entity, with its own tax identifier. It is not the same taxpayer under a new number.
  • A change of legal form between two companies. This one can go either way. Tell us in the request exactly what happened and we will help you choose.

This matters because the two operations leave your history in different places. A tax ID change relabels the whole account: every invoice already in it becomes associated with the new identifier. A new account leaves each invoice under the identifier it was issued with.

The same user can manage both accounts and switch between them from the account menu: see Add and manage accounts. Each account keeps its own history, and a new account needs its own plan.

Request a change of your account ID number

Section titled “Request a change of your account ID number”

To request a change of your account’s VAT number, click on the gear icon at the top of the page and click on Account settings. Once you are in the page of your fiscal data:

  • Click on the Start request for identifier option that you find on the right side of the screen.
  • In the next step, select Start request, make the request and indicate the reason for the change.
  • Use the Select files option to attach the VAT card or the photocopy of the ID card you wish to enter in your account.
  • To send the request, use the Send option.

Finally, our support team receives your request. We will check the data and modify the NIF if everything is correct. Once the change has been made, we will notify you via the submitted request, which you can access through the Support channel.

Change the second identifier: the organisation ID

Section titled “Change the second identifier: the organisation ID”

Besides the tax ID, the account can carry a second identifier, which the screen calls Identifier or Organisation ID. It sits on the same Fiscal data and logo page, just below the tax ID, and each country stores there what applies to it: a company number, a registry number or, in some cases, an IBAN. It is changed with a request of its own, not with the tax ID request.

  • On the card Do you need to change the ID of this account?, click the Start request by organisation ID option.
  • That link takes you straight to the request form, without the window that reminds you which documents are needed. Write the reason for the change in the comment yourself and attach the same documentation as for the tax ID.

Changing the tax ID or the organisation ID runs the account’s identity certification again against the new value. What happens next depends on how you did it:

  • With a digital certificate. The check runs again, and the certificate has to contain the new identifier. If it contains the old one, the certification is cleared and you have to do it again with a certificate carrying the new value.
  • Manually with our support team. It stays valid: there is nothing to repeat.
  • If the account had not certified its identity yet. The change neither adds nor removes anything.
